the Pre-War

Banjo Challenge

Gibson Mastertone

Here is a sampling of a couple of different banjos.  One of them is a genuine prewar flathead style 3, TB conversion to 5-string.  One of them is a modern reproduction with a popular modern Pre-War reproduction tone ring.  Both have the same brand of fresh, light gauge strings, a Snuffy Smith III bridge and a Taiwan Remo head tuned to the same pitch.  Both are being played into the same microphone from the same distance and by the same player (me) and with the same picks.  Can you guess which banjo is the pre-war and which one is my much newer style 3?

Click on the audio links to hear each clip.  This may take a couple of minutes to load because these are high quality files.
